Hearty Slow-Cooker Porridge

1 c. bulgar wheat
1 ½ c. steel cut oats
½ c. brown rice
¼ c. wheat germ
3 c. water
3 c. unsweetened vanilla almond milk, skim or any other milk substitute
½ c. unsweetened or natural applesauce
1 tbsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. nutmeg, preferably freshly ground
Pinch salt


Make shortly before going to bed. Spray the inside of a crock pot lightly with nonstick spray and add all ingredients to slow-cooker. Stir to combine and set slow-cooker on low for two hours. It should automatically switch to warm after two hours. In the morning, if you find that the porridge is too runny, switch the setting to “low” until thickened. Serve with brown sugar, maple syrup, nuts and dried or fresh fruit, as desired.
